Orienting Futures: Emerging Culturally and Ecologically Responsive Practice
Australia is preparing to co-host the UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) in 2026 alongside Pacific Island countries. This opportunity arises from commitments made at COP28 in 2023 to transition away from fossil fuels. Public sentiment, as captured in the 2024 Climate of the Nation report, shows 64% of Australians expect concrete actions like polluter-pays schemes by 2026 to credibly lead on climate issues. This push reflects broader regional vulnerabilities, with Pacific nations facing rising sea levels and extreme weather, amplifying the need for inclusive practices that respect local cultures and ecosystems. The Australian Government released its Strategy for Nature 2024-2030 in September 2024, aiming to reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 and achieve nature-positive outcomes by 2050. This aligns with the Closing the Gap Implementation Plan 2024-2026, which integrates culturally responsive tools to address indigenous disparities in safety and wellbeing. Additionally, the Multicultural Plan 2023-2026 focuses on building organizational cultural responsiveness, while the Early Years Strategy First Action Plan 2024-2027 emphasizes agile responses to emerging challenges, including climate-related ones. Social enterprises in Australia are expanding rapidly, with the sector expected to turn over $5.5 billion by 2030. These businesses tackle social and environmental issues, creating jobs and fostering innovation in areas like climate justice and food security. Initiatives in 2025, including peer learning communities, have developed resources for regenerative design, enabling shifts in organizational practices toward sustainability and equity. Climate change exacerbates inequities, with extreme weather events in 2024-2025 disproportionately affecting First Nations peoples, LGBTIQA+ individuals, and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) groups. These communities face heightened risks to food systems, health, and livelihoods. Responsive practices promote trauma
