The human cost remains staggering: over 1.8 million combined casualties, including up to 1.2 million Russian losses, surpassing any major conflict since World War II. Civilian harm escalated in 2025 and 2026, with more deaths and injuries than prior years, compounded by systematic infrastructure destruction. Ukraine's population shrinks from conscription and displacement, while Russia's economy contracts despite wartime spending topping 250 billion euros annually.

Russia insists on retaining occupied Donbas areas, rejecting security guarantees for Kyiv that could prevent future aggression. Less visible are the war's asymmetric impacts: Ukrainian innovations in drones and naval tactics have decimated Russia's Black Sea Fleet, forcing withdrawals from Crimea. Yet reports of sexual violence by Russian troops, affecting hundreds of women and girls, underscore a hidden atrocity layer, with true numbers likely higher due to stigma. Russia's narrative of inevitable victory clashes with battlefield realities, where advances average mere dozens of meters daily.

Trade-offs abound: A hasty ceasefire might save lives short-term but invite renewed invasion without robust guarantees, potentially fracturing NATO. Europe's rearmament, spurred by the conflict, boosts defense budgets but strains economies amid inflation. Ukraine's emergence as Europe's most battle-hardened military offers a bulwark, yet without sustained munitions, risks ceding initiative to Moscow's superior manpower.
