On the flip side, rushed or poorly governed adoption exposes firms to escalating security vulnerabilities, as embedded AI increases attack surfaces, and to compliance burdens from fragmented regulations. Several U.S. states have AI laws taking effect in 2026, with requirements around bias, transparency, and algorithmic discrimination that carry litigation risks and economic penalties—projections suggest nationwide equivalents could eliminate tens of thousands of jobs through slowed investment.

Non-obvious angles emerge in the trade-offs. While agentic capabilities promise efficiency gains, they intensify demands for trust, sovereignty, and workforce adaptation—issues often sidelined in favour of hype around new models. Open-source reasoning models push enterprise boundaries but heighten security priorities. Moreover, the gap between AI leaders realising valuation premiums and the majority struggling with integration creates a widening divide, where inaction carries compounding costs in lost productivity and competitiveness, even as regulatory uncertainty discourages half-measures.
