Children and young people with a parent with dementia (Research and Publications webinar series)
Young onset dementia—where symptoms develop before age 65—has drawn increasing attention in the UK because it affects people often still raising children or in the prime of working life. Recent estimates put the number of adults living with young onset dementia at around 70,800, roughly 7.5% of the total UK dementia population of about 944,000 to 982,000. Updated figures from Dementia UK and NHS data highlight this group, with some snapshots showing around 35,000 diagnosed cases under 65.
Unlike dementia in older age, which usually involves adult children or spouses as carers, young onset cases frequently disrupt households with dependent children or adolescents. These young people experience a parent's progressive cognitive and behavioral changes during formative years, often leading to them assuming informal caring roles—practical help, emotional support, or supervision—while grappling with grief, confusion, and fear about the future.
The real-world toll includes strained mental health for the children, disruptions to schooling and social development, financial pressures from lost parental income, and altered family roles that can force premature maturity. Research consistently shows these families face greater isolation and unmet needs than those dealing with late-onset dementia, as services often cater to older demographics.
The timeliness stems from better recognition and data on young onset dementia, including its links to midlife risk factors like vascular health, depression, and social isolation. While some evidence suggests dementia risk may be falling for newer generations overall due to healthier lifestyles, the absolute numbers affected by young onset cases—and their ripple effects on children—continue to rise with population trends and improved detection. This makes the experiences of these young people a pressing concern amid broader dementia growth projected to reach 1.4 million cases by 2040.
